Chapter 13

Peanut and Ruby were standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon using her phone to take pictures of themselves with the canyon in the background. Peanut had just told her it was the scariest piece of land erosion he’d ever seen, which had her laughing in every shot. And then his phone began to ring.

“Hang on a sec, sweetheart.” When he saw the call was from Betty, he answered with a laugh. “I thought I told you not to call unless you were bleeding.”

“Hi, Peanut, this is Jack, Betty’s husband. Actually, she has been bleeding, but I think they have most all of that either stapled up or bandaged.”

Peanut gasped and quickly put the phone on speaker so Ruby could hear, too. “No! Oh my God, I am so sorry. What happened?”

“She was in a wreck. She’s going to be okay. She has a concussion, some staples on her chin, a few smaller cuts, and a broken nose. She’s worried about papers she needs to file for you this week because right now she’s seeing double and doesn’t know when that will clear up.”

“Oh good lord!” Peanut said. “You tell her I’m sorry she’s hurt and to quit worrying about paperwork. I can call a temp agency and have them send someone down from Savannah, and Betty can direct traffic from home. Just tell her she’s not to go to the office, and she can talk the temp through anything she needs to know over the phone, okay?”

“Yes, okay.”

“I have Betty’s number, so tell her I will give that number to the temp agency. Then when the temp gets to town, she’ll call Betty for further instructions.”

Ruby leaned in toward the phone. “It’s me, Jack. Tell Betty I send her love and get-well-soon wishes.”

“Thanks, Ruby, I sure will, and thank you, Peanut. Really sorry to break in on your honeymoon like this.”

“You didn’t mess up anything,” Peanut said. “Just tell Betty we’re thinking of her and I’ll check in on her when we’re back.”

“Will do,” Jack said, disconnected, then put the phone on the nightstand. “He’s going to call a temp from Savannah. The temp will call you at home for instructions, and you’re not to go to the office at all.”

Betty sighed with relief. “I was just so worried.”

“And now there’s nothing to worry about, right?” Jack said.

Betty nodded.

“Just rest. I’m not going anywhere,” Jack said.

Ruby was still fretting about Betty after the phone call was over until Peanut took her in his arms and kissed her senseless. When he finally stopped, Ruby was reeling. “Not that I’m complaining, but what was that all about?” she asked.

Peanut tapped the end of her nose. “You are not allowed to start planning rescues for anyone but me until we finish with this honeymoon.”

Ruby laughed. “So, when are you going to need saving?”

“Oh, you already saved me,” Peanut said. “However, you never know when I may need more mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”

“I’m on it,” Ruby said and planted a sweet, long kiss squarely on his mouth.
